Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) said that it will transform manual electric billing stations to digital platforms where mobile and internet payment modes and banking systems will be replacing the existing payment stations.

The utility was channeling both prepaid and postpaid bills through outsourced and in-house built stations. However, by the end of the current fiscal year, high electric voltage customers will have the opportunity to pay bills via the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) while low and medium voltage customers will be served through mobile and internet systems. Postpaid bills will also enjoy friendly payment systems such as kiosks and supermarkets will be part of the billing methods, Shiferahw Telila, CEO of EEU told reporters, today.

There are at least three million households that are suffering from poorly managed bill collection stations. Added to the newly introduced power tariffs, lots of complaints are making noises. According to Demeke Robba, deputy CEO and head of automation and energy with EEU, the introduction of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software and automation platforms will enable the utility to provide satisfactory services.

During the second quarter of the fiscal year, some 3.2 billion birr has been amassed from utility bills and long overdue payments. A665 million birr outstanding bill, from the targeted 872 million birr, carried over since 2007 has been collected.
