The development objective of Renewable Energy Guarantees Program Project is to increase renewable energy generation capacity through private sector participation in Ethiopia. Some of the negative impacts include: (i) soil erosion; (ii) land contamination; (iii) air pollution; (iv) construction noise; (v) water pollution; (vi) habitat loss and disturbance; (vii) disruption of road traffic; (viii) pressure on public services; (ix) community health and safety risks; (x) occupation health and safety risks; and (xi) loss of physical cultural resources.

Some of the mitigation measures include: (i) topsoil shall be set aside and reserved where possible; (ii) hazardous waste, including broken PV panels, shall be disposed of in accordance with best industry practice and in compliance with the applicable regulations in Ethiopia at the time of disposal; (iii) Water shall be sprayed on all internal roads to minimize dust dispersion when necessary; (iv) noisy activities shall be scheduled to day time hours; (v) storage areas for fuel and hazardous materials shall be kept at safe distance from the nearest water body and be roofed and have a concrete floor with a bund for secondary containment and collection of spills; (vi) workers shall be strictly prohibited from cutting trees outside of the project site and from all hunting or killing of wildlife; (vii) design the take-off from the highway to the project site in such a way that there is minimal disruption for the other road users and minimal risk of traffic accidents; (viii) establish transparent and consistent recruitment procedures and avoid recruitment at the gate in order to reduce the number of camp followers in form of job-seekers; (ix) conduct public health campaigns addressing issues of behavioral change, water and sanitation, and HIV/AIDS; (x) prevent gender based violence (GBV), sexual abuse and exploitation and child labor in the workplace; and (xi) establish a chance finds procedure.
