Tanzania will host the Africa Energy Summit 2025. It lasts for two days, 27 – 28, January 2025.

The summit is anticipated to bring together visionary leaders, international partners, and key stakeholders to address one of Africa’s most pressing challenges: universal access to reliable and sustainable power.

All energy brains look for Dar Es Salaam to devise a strategy on the fate of electrifying 300 million Africans by 2030.

What does Misson300 Mean for Ethiopia.

Mission300 is a continent-wide effort aimed at enhancing both on-grid and off-grid electricity access, with significant involvement from the private sector, according to early announcements. The summit in Dar Es Salaam is expected to serve as a platform to refine the intervention’s structure, approach, engagement strategies, commitments, and communication plan.

Ethiopia has more than 60 million citizens, which is half of its total population, living without access to modern electricity. The country relies heavily on international electricity initiatives to address this significant challenge.

Even though Ethiopia faces a substantial domestic electricity shortage, it is pushing forward with regional power integration, exporting renewable hydroelectric power to Kenya, Sudan, Djibouti, and soon Tanzania. While there are clear benefits to this integration, the long-term advantages for Ethiopia are uncertain due to the opaque nature of the agreements, commitments, and financial dealings involved.

Ethiopia’s power grid has a limited capacity and heavily relies on hydroelectricity, with only a minor contribution from wind power, making it vulnerable during periods of low rainfall. Expanding regional Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) increases the risk to the entire power sector.

However, Mission300 could offer a chance to diversify the energy mix by encouraging Independent Power Producers (IPPs). By utilizing the existing public-private partnership framework alongside Mission300, Ethiopia can facilitate IPPs to introduce solar and wind energy, thus increasing both the capacity and diversity of its power system.

Mission300 offers a significant opportunity for millions of Ethiopians to experience electricity in their homes and communities for the first time through off-grid solutions, while also ensuring the stability of the national grid.

What Message Do We Anticipate in Dar Es Salaam

Ethiopia should convey a message of commitment to mission300 while emphasizing the need for equitable and transparent engagements to amplify regional energy cooperation and help address its domestic energy challenges.

Hosted through an unprecedented collaboration between the Government of Tanzania, the African Union, the African Development Bank Group, the World Bank Group, and the Rockefeller Foundation, this two-day summit represents a crucial step toward energizing Africa’s future, reads AfDB statement.

Ethiopia should explicitly outline its electrification priorities, describe the supporting policies, detail engagement strategies, and establish a timeline for immediate action while all energy brains are in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. This time, the message should be different from the business as usual scenario that keeps millions in the dark.

The summit should be an occasion for decisive action, and Ethiopia needs to be represented comprehensively by its government, utilities, energy associations, expert groups, businesses, and civil society organizations. These opportunities are rare, and it’s vital to coordinate efforts to capitalize on them for the benefit of the millions of Ethiopians who have lived without electricity for generations.
