The 1st turbine with generating capacity of 375 MW inaugurated today, 20 February 2022, in the presence of Abiy Ahmed Ali, Prime Minister of Ethiopia.
The total design generating capacity of the hydro power plant is 5150 MW & an annual energy production of 15.76TWH,ย equivalent to this year’s total energy production from the existing power plants throughout the country.ย
The power plant has 13 turbines with 375 MW generating capacity each. The design capacity was changed few times and the latest one was from 6450MW to 5150 MW.
When complete #GERD will be the largest hydroelectric power plant in #Africa.ย It is built by direct contribution & purchase of bond by citizens of #Ethiopia and government budget.ย The project is estimated to cost USD5billion.ย No external loan.ย
The Dam has 145m height and 1780m length, and holds 74 billion metric cube water expected to fall up 246km length when in full .
