Today, 19th July, 2021, the GERD reservoir reached overtopping water level. Currently, the incoming flow passes through both bottom outlets and overtopping. This year also we are experiencing extreme rainfall in the Abbay Basin(Blue Nile Basin). As a result, the GERD reservoirย has filled rapidly. GERD is an Ethiopian hydropower dam and guardian infrastructure asset for the downstream countries against climate change. It is also a means to develop further and prosper together, it can never be a treat.ย The next milestone for GERD construction is to realize the early generation in the next few months. Ethiopiaย is building the Dam for a sole purpose of generating electric power. Ethiopian economy has been growing for over a decade. As the economy continues to grow, the energy demand is steadily growing as well. Moreover,ย 60 million Ethiopians, more than 60 % of the population, are still living without access to electricty. The government ofย Ethiopianย hopes to close the energy gap coming fromย GERD.
Abay has always been a sense of regret for Ethiopians for not leveraging the water resource for the countryโs development aspiration. Many previous leaders tried it with no success until Meles Zenawi, the late Prime Minister ofย Ethiopiaย , who championed theย GERDย Project, sought after a new sprit of collaboration with all the Nile Basin countries for a fair share of the Nile water resource as he lighted the torch for the start of the construction of theย GERD.
Grand Renaissance Dam, Hidase Gidb as Ethiopians call it, is much more than a Dam for them. In fact, it is much more than the politics and the government running the country right now. As Ethiopians, they have no much concern for the water coming out of the Dam. What matters most is justice and fairness to the use of their own resource, second to the badly needed electricity.
All Ethiopians from all walks of life are excited to hear theย completion of 2nd round water filling as planned.ย ย
Ethiopians knew their fore fathers built theย Obelisks of Axum,ย Castles of Gonder,ย Churches of Lalibela,ย Jegol of Hararย and the many other historical phenomena with perseverance, commitment, togetherness and sacrifices and today’s generation considersย GERDย a continuation of that legacy.
